Meet Buffy

This adorable young puppy was born with a rare defect that was causing constant pain. Could surgery give her a chance at a normal life?

Buffy the young German Shepherd should have been enjoying life as a happy and energetic puppy but, instead, she arrived at Woodgreen suffering from constant pain caused by a rare birth defect.

Buffy’s defect meant she was struggling to urinate and was suffering with irritated skin and persistent discomfort.

Our vets felt that surgery was the best way to give this puppy a chance at a normal life. But, as with all surgeries, there were risks so they had to be certain it was right for Buffy.

A ground-breaking surgery

Before we operated, an X-ray confirmed that Buffy’s internal anatomy was completely normal. This was great news as it meant there was a strong chance surgery could resolve all of Buffy’s pain.

Our vets completed a soft tissue reconstruction which would not only allow Buffy to urinate normally but also cover her exposed sensitive skin to prevent the irritation she’d been experiencing.

Because Buffy’s condition was so rare, her surgery was the first of its kind here at Woodgreen and we were thrilled that everything went well and Buffy could begin healing.

A bumpy start to recovery

After surgery, Buffy went to stay with a foster carer so that she could recover in a comfy home environment.

Recovery wasn’t without its complications as it took Buffy a little while to establish normal toileting habits. Thankfully, with careful monitoring and lots of love and care, Buffy was soon on the mend.

Puppy love

With Buffy now acting like the energetic puppy she was always supposed to be, we knew she was ready for a fresh start in a new home.

During filming of The Dog House, we introduced Buffy to Shareen, Mark and their German Shepherd Missy who’d been feeling lonely and wanted a canine companion. At first, Mark was reluctant to take on a puppy but Buffy’s charm proved too hard to resist and she soon completed their family.

Buffy and Missy totally love each other. They love to play fight and play tuggy together! Buffy is also obsessed with water. We’ve taken her kayaking, which she loves, and often take them both to the seaside.
