Meet Milo

11-month-old Milo arrived in a shocking state. This puppy had spent his entire life inside a crate and was terrified of the outside world.

Covered in his own waste and stuck inside a crate, our team were heartbroken to see the state 11-month-old Milo arrived in.

After spending his life stuck in a small space, he was frightened and overwhelmed. But our team were determined to get his tail wagging again.

Puppies need to be introduced to new experiences like interacting with people and other dogs. It’s a crucial time for a dog’s development and helps them grow into confident canines. Poor Milo had missed out on so much.

Milo starts over

After missing out on vital socialisation, Milo had a lot of catching up to do! Socialisation is teaching a puppy to interact in an appropriate way with people and other dogs, and we needed to start from scratch with Milo.

Milo’s carers started by taking him out of his kennel for daily walks. To make sure he wouldn’t feel too overwhelmed, they took things slowly and allowed him to decide when he’d had enough.

As his confidence grew, the team also introduced him to some of our other four-legged residents for a bit of canine company. At first, dogs were really scary for Milo, but he soon learnt that they were actually fun to play with.

Milo, a white and black Papillon Jack Russell cross breed dog, stands smartly with his tail up in the air. He is gently taking a treat from Ciara, a behaviour and training advisor, who is crouched next to him on the grass. She is wearing a dark green Woodgreen sweatshirt with black jeans. She has cheerfully coloured blonde, yellow and pink hair and is wearing a purple dog snack bag around her waist. Milo is wearing a blue collar and a black harness. Ciara is holding the black lead which is attached. It is a bright day with a blue sky and they are calmly enjoying each other’s company.

With confidence came playful, puppy-like behaviour. It was encouraging to see Milo excited and the team worked patiently to teach him positive ways to express his cheeky personality!

Whilst there’s lots we did to help Milo at our centre, we knew that time in a real home would be the real gamechanger. So we placed him in the capable hands of Woodgreen fosterer Juliana.

After spending so much of his life in a small space, Milo wasn’t up to speed on typical ‘house rules’ but luckily he was a quick learner – especially when given lots of praise and treats.

Milo's new lease of life

On The Dog House, Milo was introduced to mum Jules and her three children. After the heartbreaking loss of her husband, Jules wanted to get a dog to help the family heal.

Despite his previous world being so small, Milo had come a long way and opened up. He won over Jules’ family with his playful personality. It was clear he’d bring a lots of joy to their lives and receive just as much in return – making them a perfect match.

Today, Milo is thriving with his new family, who are besotted with him.
